Oprah’s speech at the Golden Globes was powerful because she took a stand on an important issue. The best part was her attempt at unification against a societal issue. She didn’t demonize men and didn’t lead with anger. It was about hope and empowerment.
I’m afraid that we, as women, have already been derailed and failed to embolden our young girls. While Oprah’s speech was inspiring, the social media outpour afterwards was disheartening. Women began bashing each other over social media about what they tweeted, what they wore, and who they are associated with. Here are a few examples.
- Ivanka Trump tweeted in support of Oprah’s speech. Rather than embracing her in the fold of strong women, celebrities tweeted what I’d call “mean girl” tweets. Chrissy Tiegen said “ew go away”. Alyssa Milano said “You can make a lofty donation to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund that is available to support your father’s accusers.” And Natasha Rothwell said “your dad’s a predator”. Ivanka is not Donald Trump. She has a right to affect change and be a part of the movement and the conversation.
- Someone wore a red dress. Apparently, the women of Hollywood decided to all wear black dresses to make a statement about #MeToo. One rogue star wore red. She was blasted on social media for her choice. It’s a dress. She made her own choice. She didn’t go along with everyone else. It doesn’t mean she is a bad person or that she can’t be part of the #MeToo movement.
- Georgina is out. It was pointed out that no one wore a Marchesa dress. Marchesa is a company owned by Georgina Chapman, soon to be ex-wife of Harvey Weinstein. Why is it that she has been bad-mouthed and turned against because of her husband’s actions? Again, it’s excluding rather than embracing.
Oprah called for everyone to work together so that #MeToo will be a thing of the past. We shouldn’t have parameters on who can and can’t join the #TimesUp movement. We aren’t back in middle school where we are creating cliques and you only get to join if you are a cool girl. The #TimesUp movement should be open to anyone who wants to stand tall and say NO MORE! So let’s unite and put the petty differences aside. And, most important, let’s show our girls that all women can stand together on this issue. No one needs permission to be a part of the movement. Everyone’s voice is important. So let’s all say it together, girls. NO MORE!
