Ignite Learning

There’s this thing going around. You might have heard of it. It’s called the coronavirus AKA COVID-19. Restaurants, theaters, malls, and even schools have shut down around the world.
While health is the number one concern, parents and teens across the country are in a panic about the disruption in schooling, sports clubs discontinued, the cancelling of the SAT, the lack of learning to prepare for the AP tests. But here’s something to keep in mind…
THIS IS AFFECTING EVERYONE, NOT JUST YOUR TEEN.
Schools across the world are aware of the upheaval that the coronavirus created. AP exams, SAT/ACT, sports achievements, competitions, teaching, learning…all disrupted.
ANY COLLEGE THAT IS WORTH ATTENDING WILL TAKE THIS DISRUPTION INTO CONSIDERATION.
I keep hearing parents say “I don’t want my child to get behind”. Don’t worry, they won’t. Their peers are also in the same boat. If no one is running the rat race, how can you possibly get behind? Take a deep breath parents. Academically your children will get through this. I promise.
AND WHILE I DON’T BELIEVE IN LIVING FOR THE COLLEGE APPLICATION…
Imagine your child writing their college application essays in the next few years. They could say “I managed to keep my grades up during the coronavirus pandemic”. Well, that’s boring.
WHAT IF YOUR CHILD COULD SAY…
“I took the time to learn PYTHON.”
“I taught my sister to make friendship bracelets.”
“I taught myself how to play the piano/draw/sing by watching You Tube videos.”
“I built a two-story playhouse in my backyard complete with electricity and plumbing.”
“I put together a food drive in my neighborhood to help replenish the local food banks.”
“I reconnected with my family.”
YOU GET MY POINT.
While you might want your teen to continue to do lessons and homework and busy work, leave time for them to explore their interests. Don’t mimic their normally long school day unless your school is mandating it.
The greatest use of this time off of school is to reignite your teen’s love of learning.
And the easiest way to do that, is to give the space and time to choose what they want to learn.
